Gratitude for What You Take for Granted

“As you begin to be grateful for what most people take for granted, the vibration of gratitude makes you more receptive to good in your life.” – Michael Beckwith

Would you like to start a gratitude practice but feel like you’ve got nothing to be grateful for? Maybe it feels like everything in your life is going wrong.

This is actually when gratitude can be most powerful.

Begin by thinking about something simple. Something very simple that you take for granted. Or maybe a relationship that you take for granted.

Focusing your gratitude on what you might take for granted has several benefits.

  1. It heightens your appreciation for what you already have. It does not change your situation, but it changes your perception. Simply changing your perception and increasing awareness of what you have makes you more appreciative of what you have, and that feels GOOD!
  2. It takes the focus off of things that are not going well that can bring you down. It’s hard to be grateful for all that is going well and all that you have while simultaneously focusing on what you do not have or what is not going well. When you focus on what you DO have, it releases some of the painful emotions or tension that you may have if you were focusing on what you do not have. Simply put, what you don’t have won’t matter as much.
  3. And to get a little woo-woo, because well, I am, it says to the Universe, “Yes, more of this please.” As Michael Beckwith stated, it opens you up to receiving more of the good.
  4. And lastly, being in a state of gratitude is one of the highest vibrational states you can be in, and one of the highest energy level states you can be in. You’re creating the space for the Universe to respond to that.

Does this make sense to you? Do you feel good when you focus on the simple things that are going well? The simple things that you may take for granted?

When I deliver my Gratitude Workshop, I often get this question – Usually someone asks me something like:

“Well, what if my life is so crappy right now that I cannot find anything to be grateful for?”

Then I ask you:

Can you focus on something simple? And I mean real simple.

Did you sleep in a bed last night? You can be grateful for that bed. Believe me, I’m grateful for my bed.

Especially because there were many nights that I slept on a cold, hard hospital floor.  And you don’t have to have experienced that in order to increase your appreciation for your bed. You can simply focus on appreciation for your bed.

Do you have running water? You can be grateful for running water. And if you’ve ever been without running water, you can recall how difficult that was.

Take a minute, right now, and think of 3 things you can be grateful for that you might be taking for granted. Look around you. Think about how often you just grab a glass of water, or reach for a perfectly ripe piece of fruit, or pick up the phone and call someone you love.

You will have a heightened appreciation for these things, and it will help take the focus off of what you do not have.  This is when practicing gratitude can be most powerful.

Gratitude – simple, powerful.
