From Blah to Ahhh: Simple Midlife Mood Shifters

You are a powerful human being. You have the power to shift your mood through simple behaviors. Here are 9 ways that you can go from feeling blah to ahhhhh!

  1. Focus on what brings you joy

In midlife, it’s easy to get stuck in routines that no longer light you up. Reconnecting with joy reminds you that your happiness matters and keeps your energy vibrant.
👉 Action:

Make a “joy list” of 5 simple activities (like gardening, reading, or laughing with a friend) and commit to one today. With my coaching clients, I share a brainstorming sheet called “My Joy Plan.” Let me know if you’d like a copy!

  • Limit social media
Social media can drain energy and fuel comparison, which is especially heavy during life transitions. Protecting your mental space helps you stay grounded in your own journey.
    👉 Action:

Set a timer for 15 minutes when you log in, then close the app without scrolling past the limit. If you’re really struggling with your use of social media/technology, check out How to Break Up with Your Phone in 90 Days by Catherine Price

  • Connect spiritually
Midlife often sparks deeper questions of purpose and meaning. Nurturing your spiritual side, whether through prayer, meditation, or reflection, provides peace and perspective.
    👉 Action:

Spend 5 quiet minutes each morning journaling about gratitude or in a guided meditation.

  • Listen to music
Music bypasses the thinking brain and goes straight to your emotions. In midlife, it can lift your mood, spark memories, and give you energy when you feel drained.

To feel relaxed, try a simple melody with slow tempo and no lyrics.

To feel energized, try a fast tempo, driving rhythm, and happy lyrical content

To process sadness, listen to music with lyrics you connect with

👉 Action: Create a “feel better” playlist and press play whenever you need a reset.

  • Reach out to a friend
Relationships often shift in midlife, but connection remains essential for well-being. Connecting with someone can instantly lighten your emotional load.
    👉 Action:

Text one friend today with a simple “Thinking of you—want to catch up soon?”

Handwrite a heartfelt gratitude letter.

  • Breathe and stretch
The body carries stress, and in midlife, physical tension can show up more quickly. Conscious breathing and stretching reset your nervous system and help you release what you’re holding.
👉 Action: Pause for 2 minutes to take deep belly breaths while reaching your arms overhead.
  • Go for a walk
Movement outdoors is one of the simplest ways to shift your mood. In midlife, walking supports both physical health and emotional clarity.
👉 Acton: Step outside for a 10-minute walk, focusing on what you see, hear, and feel.

8. Exert control where you have control
Midlife can bring circumstances beyond your control, including aging parents, career changes, kids leaving home. Redirecting focus to where you do have control builds confidence and reduces overwhelm. A sense of control is a factor associated with mental health.
👉 Action: Pick one small task, like organizing a drawer or planning your dinner, and complete it start to finish.

9. Visualize a positive future and take simple action
Midlife transitions can make the future feel uncertain, but imagining what you want opens the door to hope. Pairing vision with action makes change feel doable. It also helps to combat future-oriented worry thoughts.
👉 Action: Write down one vision for your next chapter, then take one 5-minute step toward it today.
